Welcome to Formaggejo – the cheesy fork of Forgejo

Hi there! Here you find the instructions how to get Formaggejo running on a Debian Trixie 13.

Installation

System preparation

Install docker

Follow the instructions on https://docs.docker.com/engine/install/debian/.

Enable unattended server upgrades

To run daily automatic upgrades (without automatic reboot), install unattended-upgrades and enable the unattended upgrades:

apt install unattended-upgrades
tee /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/52unattended-upgrades-extra <<"EOF"
APT::Periodic::Update-Package-Lists "1";
APT::Periodic::Unattended-Upgrade "1";
Unattended-Upgrade::Origins-Pattern {

Add user forgejo with user and group id 1001

addgroup --gid 1001 forgejo
adduser --uid 1001 --gid 1001 --disabled-password forgejo
adduser forgejo docker

Change the SSH port of the server

For nicer URLs of git clone via SSH, the default server SSH port may be changed to a non-default value:

tee /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/10_extra.conf <<EOF
MaxAuthTries 15
PasswordAuthentication no
Port 2222
EOF

Then, restart the SSH server with

systemctl restart ssh.service

Make sure to have an SSH key associated with the root account try with the running SSH session to login with the changed settings. If it is not working, remove the file /etc/ssh/sshd_config.d/10_extra.conf and restart the SSH server, again.

Formaggejo installation

Switch to user forgejo

su forgejo

Clone this repository into forgejo user’s home repository

cd
git clone https://formaggejo.it/formaggejo/formaggejo.it.git
cd formaggejo.it

Start Formaggejo serving https://formaggejo.it

docker compose up -d

Set-up Formaggejo

Open https://formaggejo.it from any browser and follow the first-time set-up. Modify following settings:

• Instance title: Formaggejo
• Instance slogan: Beyond coding we cheese.
• Hidden email domain: noreply.formaggejo.it

Create also an administrator account, here.

Update

Update Debian

apt update
apt upgrade

Update Forgejo or Caddy

For a major Forgejo version update, read the release announcement and breaking changes section. Then, modify the major version number in the docker-compose.yml file.

For both minor and major Forgejo updates, run

cd ~forgejo/formaggejo.it
docker compose pull
docker compose down
docker compose up -d

Update Formaggejo

To update to include latest Formaggejo modifications of Forgejo, login as user forgejo and change to the ~forgejo/formaggejo.it directory.

su forgejo

Then, as forgejo user run

cd ~/formaggejo.it
git pull
docker compose down
docker compose up -d
